Matt Haig, Notes on a Nervous Planet

"Keep allowing yourself the human privilege of mistakes. Be less robot, more human. Be more imperfect. Evolution happens through mistakes."

I read this book a few months before the Covid nightmare began. Matt Haig explores our experience of the world we live in, and how in many respects we are expected to live in a world where our brains aren’t yet evolved to manage our lifestyles. This causes a torrent of anxiety which isn’t easily noticeable but is definitely present.

Haig looks at things we can do to help our anxiety. You’re not alone if you feel burnt out and want to switch off and turn away from what’s happening. When anxiety starts to overwhelm our senses and hijack our minds we can:

Take a breath…take as many as you need.

Go easy on yourself, the world is quite weird right now. It is ok to not know how to feel about all of these concerning challenges in the world.

It is ok to make mistakes. The weight you feel isn’t yours alone.

Break the day up into smaller, manageable chunks and deal with those first. The future looks after itself, as does that past.

You are not alone and finding people to share your concerns which is vital for our mental wellbeing. Don’t keep it to yourself. Therapy is one avenue where learn how to manage your anxiety in healthier ways.
