Thoughts and Feelings Aren’t Facts
This is important to realise when reflecting moment to moment, why am I feeling or thinking the way I am? It gets even more complicated if what we are thinking and feeling, is something that we understand is part of our identity? I can make the saying “I think, therefore I am”, have quite frightening connotations. “I am an anxious person” isn’t the same as “I’m experiencing anxiety”. You are not your feelings. You experience feelings.
Our thoughts and feelings are directly linked to the environment around us. This may sound obvious, but it is easy to take for granted just how much we are constantly being affected by our environment. If we start to feel like we’re losing our temper more, are vacant at home or in company, our anxieties are bubbling over more frequently, it could be down to our environment more than anything else.
That ‘thing’ that tipped you over and have assumed is the problem, may not actually be the problem. The reason you’re not coping with work may have nothing to do with having a serious mental illness, but an accumulation of that has become too much.
Counselling can help us become more reflective and aware of our feelings and what they’re trying to tell us. It can help you explore your thoughts and understand what messages they’re sending. You can become more self assured and confident in the choices you make.
